We were greeted with a big smile at the door and made to feel very welcome. The bedroom was a good size and very comfortable. Plenty of hot drinks, fresh milk and treats. Breakfast was excellent. Lots of fresh fruit and cooked breakfast sufficient and nicely prepared. Separate lounge for guest use also a bonus. Would definitely book again!

We stayed at Ammonite Lodge in order to visit a friend who was unwell. Our thanks to James and Katherine whose friendly and helpful approach and can-do attitude enhanced what proved to be a most comfortable and homely visit. The bedroom and en suite were clean and of a high standard, with a very full hospitality tray and even fresh milk. The dining room is well laid out with plenty of space between tables, breakfasts were so good we couldn't resist, and James' home-made jams a highlight - definitely not good for the waistline but very 'moorish'!The house is on a busy main road, which we thought might be noisy, but inside it is quiet and relaxing.Do take a moment to read the history of the ammonite which gave the house its name- a treasure on display in the hallway. We would definitely stay there again.

Our stay are Ammonite Lodge was just perfect. We accidentally muddled our booking but James was all to happy to accommodate us and amend it. Our room was gorgeous as described in pictures. Ensuite included too. We had tea and coffee making facilities in our room also. We didn’t use the communal seating room but it looked lovely and homely. Bed extremely comfy. The breakfast was phenomenal. 10/10 from us. We would definitely stay again. You can’t beat this!!

A very welcome reception upon arrival and assistance with my luggage to my room. The bedroom was spotlessly clean and plenty of drinks facilities available. Lovely comfortable bed and wardrobe and drawer space. The breakfast had a good selection of cereals and fruit drinks, followed by a satisfactory breakfast. I would stay here again and recommend the establishment to friends and family. The only minor drawback was parking to unload and load my luggage due to the hotel being on a main road with yellow lines. Apart from that a visit is a must.

This place was excellent in all respects. The room was spacious, clean and full of niceties like kids games, sweeties, tea and coffee tray. Bathrobes were made available and the bathroom was spotless. The Mira shower was great. We enjoyed the cooked breakfast too with home made muesli, yogurts and vast selection of fresh cut fruit. Our hosts were very kind and helpful. We would come back again. Close proximity to Jurassic coast and countryside.

My daughter and I stayed in the two bed en-suite room.A nice room, the only disadvantage is that there is no real door in the bathroom, which could prove awkward depending on your company. Our car was parked in front of the hotel. I stayed at the Ammonite this week and was treated with a rare but genuine warmth from start to finish. The premises are spotless and tastefully decorated and bright and colourful, but it is the 'little details' that make all the difference - the sweets on the tea tray and the tissues by the bed. There is a guest sitting room which is very homely and had I had longer I definitely would have used it to relax, and the dining room next door was beautifully but unobtrusively, Christmassy, with 'presents' wrapped beneath the small tree - my room was clean and very comfortable and I had a wide range of drinks available to choose from - Catherine offered me a flask of fresh milk upon arrival for my tea - which was greatly appreciated. My breakfast was a pure delight. There was a wide variety of goodies to choose from:juices, jams &toppings, cereals, etc, the coffee was wonderful and came in my own personal cafetiere...but the cooked breakfast was delicious and could not be faulted! Mine hosts were charming and very welcoming - I shall come back again and bring my husband next time. Thank you very much Ammonite Lodge &WELL DONE!

Beautiful house with a good variety on offer for breakfast. With 2 of our party over 6ft the low ceilings in the attic room were a challenge but the room was lovely. Whilst our son's bed was very comfortable, the double bed mattress was way too firm for our liking which was the only down side to our stay.

Stayed in chard simply to meet a friend for one night and I came down from the Midlands. I chose the Ammonite lodge based on price and ratings. When I arrived, Katherine was very friendly and helpful and showed me the room. The only downside to room 3 was a separate bathroom, being 6m across the landing. Otherwise everything was excellent and comfortable. The breakfast seemed to be very well laid out with a huge choice of things and full English offered as well (I don't eat breakfast so only had tea, which was nice!)

I felt relaxed and welcome, the room was everything needed for an overnight stay. The only negative is parking, there are only 4 spaces at the front of the building on the main high street, there is parking a short distance away but this isn't ideal when you have bags to carry.Unfortunately my schedule didn't allow time for me to wait for breakfast to begin so I cannot comment on that.Overall nice place and I would stay again.

Our weekend in Chard and Axminster to visit relations and local sites of interest was made complete by our stay at The Ammonite Lodge. From the point of arrival we were warmly welcomed by Catherine and James and quickly settled into our room. During our stay nothing was too much trouble for them to answer our queries with advice and help. The hotel itself was able to meet all our needs and feel like home. The accommodation, food and amenities were first class. My wife and I along with my brother and his wife would have no hesitation in recommending the Ammonite Lodge to friends and relatives. May I take this opportunity to thank the proprietors Catherine and James for making our weekend such an enjoyable time.

We arrived tired after a long drive and were immediately offered a pot of tea, which was just what we needed to revive us! The room was very comfortable, with tea, coffee and chocolate available, and fresh milk in a flask. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Altogether a very pleasant stay.

My friend Maureen and I had a most enjoyable stay whilstattending a friends Golden Wedding Anniversary party wknd in Axminster. Katherine &James were charming hosts, the breakfast choice hot &cold most appertising and the rooms spotlessly clean. A pretty quiet rear garden to rest in is an added bonus to this super located guest house. It certainly was a gem we found.

James and Katherine have been nothing but wonderful and most hospitable during our 2 nights stay at Ammonite Lodge. Nothing was too difficult for them and when one is traveling with 3 young boys, it is a major plus! The rooms (Room 1 &6) were clean (fresh, crisp linens!!) and breakfast was healthy with good variety. I am gluten and dairy intolerant, and had put a small request in, no surprise it was catered for during breakfast. We are all blown away, can't wait to visit again next year!

Havent really been in many B&B's so wasnt sure what to expect but Ammonite Lodge was lovely. Katherine and James were very friendly and very welcoming nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was fantastic and they even catered for my non gluten diet. Definitely worth a visit. Only 1 tiny problem was the road noise but if you ask for a room at the back this wouldnt be a problem. Very clean and tidy, a lovely place to stay.

We first met Katherine and James when James was running 5 star hotels in Asia. Ammonite lodge is no exception to this standard. Every little detail has been thought of and it truly is an exceptional B&B.The house is exceptionally welcoming and full of character with a super guest lounge, breakfast room and a quaint garden to enjoy. The breakfast is a culinary feast with a multitude of fresh fruits, cereals, yogurts, toast, homemade jams and a made to your liking English breakfast. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and well appointed with fluffy towels, robes, full tea and coffee facilities and even a plentiful supply of fresh milk, biscuits and sweeties (a big hit with the children!)We loved our time away. Ammonite lodge is a real 'home from home' and we will definitely be back!

Stayed three nights in this charming B&B while we explored the surrounding area. James and Katherine, the hosts, have gone to exceptional heights to make the place as cosy and comfortable as possible with great little touches, with treats in the rooms, to welcome you back every day. The breakfast is better than some top hotels that I've stayed in with such a choice of fruits, cereals and cooked to order full English. I would recommend a stay here.

Both Katherine and James were kind, welcoming and helpful in answering any questions I may have about both the hotel and Chard itself. Not only was the room spotless and clean, but there was also tea and a welcoming cupcake, which was very much appreciated. Both the bathroom and the room itself were very spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was a highlight and a great way to start off the day, with an astounding number of choices, including a delicious full English Breakfast. 10/10 would recommend staying there, whether it is for a short trip at Chard or for a more extended period of time.

Ammonite lodge is an old building (to state the obvious), the place is quirky. The stairs are easy. Our twin room was small but had everything. Catherine and James are amongst the best hosts that we have EVER come across, super kind and attentive. Excellent breakfast, fresh produce, cooked just for you. We loved all the little touch's, cup of tea when you arrive, fresh flowers in the room, super towels etc. the list goes on! and Wi-Fi (if you must). We would recommend an evening meal at the Bath house restaurant around the corner from Ammonite Lodge, fusion of English and Asian. We would stay at the Ammonite Lodge again, any time. Thanks for taking such good care of us Chris and Dave Parker.

We got a warm welcome and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. The bed and room were comfortable, although the en-suite bathroom was rather cramped.Breakfast was excellent - good choices. The only real problem was parking. Onsite parking was down a very narrow lane and turning was difficult - I only ventured down there once.Parking outside on the High Street is well nigh impossible so, apart from when loading and unloading, we had to park in a nearby side street, which meant a fair walk.Despite this we probably will stay there again as it is convenient and the people were very friendly.

Stayed in Chard 1 night for a family event. Ammonite was perfectly located. Very friendly staff, beautiful old cottage. If you want brand new modern this is not for you but if you want quirky and lots of history this is perfect. Only slight downside was our room faced the high street so was noisy but thats what you get with a central location. Would stay agin.

We were made very welcome and the lodge itself is very welcoming and cosy. Our was very good and all so spotlessly clean and fresh. Our only slight concern was the en-suite facilities in the room. Apart from being extremely tiny (which we could cope with) the small slatted doors into it were inadequate and just about covered our embarrassment!!. I would suggest a new door at some time.

Comfortable room, very clean. A dressing gown was provided in my room and great tea and coffee facilities. Breakfast was also very good, including fresh blueberries, raspberries and strawberries (in November) and proper croissants. It's a short walk to all kinds of restaurants for lunch or dinner. Don't attempt to use the off street parking if you're driving anything wider than a VW Polo (that's what I was driving) or you're thrill seeking (or have the full insurance on your rental car). Ample free parking is available around the corner, though. James and Katherine were very helpful and hospitable. I would recommend and stay again.

There was plenty of choice for breakfast and the food was good quality.

Stayed for one night while visiting parents. Lovely hosts who couldn't be more helpful. Welcome cup of tea on arrival which is a nice touch. Ammonite Lodge is well maintained to a high standard. Breakfast was lovely with a both an excellent choice in continental offerings including fruit and also a full English as well. The only slight issue we had was the headroom in the top family room situated in the loft conversion which is veryrestrictive and perhaps this should be made clear when booking as being tall this was a problem with hitting my head on low rafters a few times, however that aside we really enjoyed it and would stay again.

I was made to feel very welcome and the breakfast is amazing and I don't use that word lightly. Thank you for a lovely stay and I will certainly be back and recommend it to family and friends xx

Recently had a 2 night stay in the family room. A very nice room although very low ceilings in parts, this would not put us off to stay again, the owners are really friendly and could not do enough for us. Breakfast was wonderful and really set us up for the day. Ideal location to visit Lyme Regis and the Jurassic coast.

Not wanting to stay at Axminster for a weekend while being invited for a wedding we decided to pick the Ammonite lodge at the lovely village of Chard. We had a great welcome and all our needs were met with a smile. The breakfast was great served with a good selection of local fruit, berries, jams, butter and of course the full English breakfast. The landscapes around chard are amazing and walks on the calm countryside streets are inspiring. Chard museum is across the road from the lodge and it has quite a collection of industrial archaeology items in addition to its portrayal of typical country life living. Lyme Regis bay is only 12 miles away and for us staying at the Ammonite meant hitting two birds with one stone.

My wife and I spent a couple of very relaxing and pleasent nights at the Ammonite lodge, along with two other couples from our family. Our hostess and staff made every effort, to welcome us and ensure our, stay was confortable and stress free. The room (6) was at the top of the building, very large and exceptionaly clean and tidy, the bathroom, whilst only for our use is across the landing. Breakfast had plenty of choices, service was quick and untrusive. The food arrived cooked as ordered hot and on a hot plate in generous portions. Overall we felt that our needs were placed first and that no request was overlooked. We will happily stay there again. I had forgotten to mention the courtyard, its small inviting and gets the earle afternoon sun, a great place to meet or chill out and maybe read a novel. We are regular experienced travellers, this has been our most enjoyable short break accomodation for over a year.

Hospitality abounds at Ammonite Lodge. Our hostess, who cooks a delicious breakfast, has been helpful with advice about places to visit and eat, but her other kindnesses and considerationsto ensure we are comfortable, have tipped our concerns about staying in a B&B right out the window.Ammonite Lodge has been a great hub from which to explore the area and go in search of the real ammonites.
Thankyou so much for your nice review ....it has been lovely having you both to stay .

A warm and friendly welcome on our arrival, shown immediately to our rooms followed by tea and biscuits in the delightful garden. The rooms are small but tastefully presented with everything needed for our stay. Immaculately clean - good linen and toiletries supplied for our use- thought that the extension cable for the hair drier was particularly thoughtful. Best ever B &B breakfast with fresh fruit, pastries and perfectly cooked 'full English' We felt thoroughly spoilt at the Ammonite Lodge and would thoroughly recommend it. The attention to detail and friendliness to us and the children was first class.

We stay at the Ammonite about twice a year, when visiting family around Chard, and would not consider staying anywhere else nearby. The hotel is full of character, a lovely old building but clean and well-maintained with everything you need in the room, right down to fresh milk (a rarity). The bedding is very comfortable, breakfast is cooked freshly from local ingredients. The owners, Andrew and Clare, are always welcoming, friendly and helpful. We'll be back before long!

Christmas this year found us in Chard for a family gathering, with me and my husband spending three very delightful nights at the Ammonite Lodge. From the moment we stepped through this historic building’s threshold, the warm, friendly, jovial and ever-attentive Andrew and Clare (with their sidekick cat Simba) went out of their way to make us feel right at home and in the proper Christmas spirit. Our room (#4) was immaculately clean and roomy with a comfortable bed and VERY spacious en suite bathroom (complete with toiletries, plush oversized towels and top quality Out of Eden brand robes). We returned each evening to find the lights turned on and curtains drawn for us, plus assorted treats and a flask of fresh milk for our in-room coffee. Each morning’s breakfast service was top notch, with a wide selection of cereals, fresh fruits, yogurts, and cooked items to please anyone’s tastes. The dining room currently features beautiful limited edition seaside artwork by local artist Gail Morris. We were so impressed with them, that we purchased three of the numbered and framed prints for our own home. We’ve stayed in our fair share of B&Bs in the past, and the Ammonite Lodge stands out above the rest. Why?Clare and Andrew are hospitality professionals who bring their wealth of global experience to the lodging (with a healthy dose of “welcome into our home” thrown in for good measure). It was no surprise to learn that Andrew spent 25 years as an executive with the Hyatt Hotel organization, with assignments throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa (EMEA).Despite this professional background, the atmosphere at Ammonite Lodge is as un-corporate and un-stuffy as one can get. Andrew’s breakfast-time belly laughs and Clare’s enchanting charm are proof of this.Plus, the other guests we met and chatted with over breakfast were also delightful. Will we stay here again, the next time we’re in Chard?Absolutely!Do we highly recommend Ammonite Lodge?Of course!

Incredibly friendly and helpful landlords;they indulge in their guests' every whim!Lounge, breakfast room and bedrooms are extremely cosy - tastefully furnished in a way that goes hand in hand with the age of the building;however, facilities are state-of-the art and modern:bathroom, TV incl. plenty of channels, free WiFi and even an iPod docking station!!!The breakfast buffet in the morning leaves nothing to be desired:a huge selection of fresh fruit, serials and cooked breakfast according to the individual requests of each guest. Even the landlords' pets are very friendly and enjoy a cuddle from guests. And all this for a budget price - best value for money guaranteed! The only disadvantage:Every stay comes to an end, eventually. But there is always the possibility to come back one day... ;-)

Recently stayed for a few nights whilst on a cricket tour in Somerset, and the Ammonite proved to be an ideal base for the trip. The hospitality of Claire and Andrew was beyond the call of duty, and the Ammonite itself was a beautiful building beautifully cared for. Tea and cake on arrival, and a fantastic breakfast spread in the morning - what more can you ask? The cricket may have been less than stellar, but the defeats were made more bearable by the hospitality of the Ammonite throughout our stay. Heres hoping that Andrew will bag a couple of centuries this season.Tim, James &Andy

We stayed at Ammonite Lodge for two nights and found it to be spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was top rate with plenty of choice. The proprietors were welcoming and extremely friendly, always on hand with recommendations on local amenities and eateries. Easy, short drive to Lyme Regis/Jurassic coast. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful welcome we received with tea &cake on arrival. Our room was small but lacked for nothing and the bathrobes an added extra. Our breakfast was delicious &our vegetarian status well catered for with delicious vege sausages. Tiny but modern bathroom and the view over the garden was delightful

Stayed at the lodge on Saturday 5th April. Very warm welcome from Andrew and Clare. This is a lovely place to stay. Instantly felt at home. Good, clean, comfortable rooms in a lodge with lots of character. Our hosts are putting in a lot of effort, with little extras here and there to make the difference, and deserve every success. Book it, you won't regret it.

The international hotel experience of the owners was woven expertly through all aspects of my stay:the personal email message welcoming my booking and responding instantly to a query;the greeting by name as I arrived;large soft towels and bathrobe in the room;a medley of really fresh blueberries, raspberries and strawberries accompanying a tailored cooked breakfast. Combined with genuinely warm and friendly chatter, this guest house outshines many larger hotels, and is a treasure I shall certainly recommend to friends.

My stay at the Ammonite Lodge Guest House was very short . Arrived late and left early but in that time I was treated wonderfully well. I felt valued as a customer and every effort was made to make me feel welcome. The room was cosy, very comfortable bed and lovely and peaceful. Breakfast was great with plenty of choice and they served it earlier than normal as they knew I had to leave early.I would definitely return next time I am in the area.Thank youJust don't attempt to park round the back if you have a big car.

We were made very welcome and allowed to check in an hour early by request. We were greeted with delicious cake and given help with baggage and parking. There were lots of little extra touches to make us feel pampered. The house is old and the room tight on space, but very quiet and comfortable. The shower was brand new. Breakfast was delicious. Very good value for money.

Have rated 5 stars not 4 because the owners (Andrew and Claire) were excellent and couldn't do enough for you. great recommendations for eating out etc, + when I left my debit card at the lodge, Andrew drove to my work to deliver it without being asked. Will definatey stay here again if I have more work in Chard.

The Ammonite Lodge Guest House was a very comfortable and pleasant place to stay. The beds were comfortable and breakfasts excellent. The owners were extremely helpful producing regular tea when I was using the downstairs lounge and dinning room to work in. Stayed here for 1 night on a business trip as it was conveniently situated for the Exeter to London main road. If you are looking for a corporate business hotel this place is not for you. If you want good old fashioned service with a nice touch of quality, original rooms with character beams you will like it here, and the price too.The lodge is a very nice old building with lots of character situated on the main street of town but with its own private parking at the rear and a lovely walled garden to take a seat once the parking is done. The hosts Andrew and Clair are relatively new to the hotel but seem to have been there for ages such is their warm welcome and knowledge of local restaurants etc.I did learn that Andrew, until recently, worked for a prestigious 5 star international hotel chain and the style that has been bought to the hotel definitely indicates this from the fresh milk, cookies and chocolates on arrival in the room through to the super soft towels, crisp linen sheets and bathrobes all provided. Add on to all of this the rather nice breakfast prepared and served by the hosts with a great morning banter to round off a great stay.We were also directed to a restaurant called the Bath House in Chard a very exceptional place with a European/Malaysian fusion of food. See separate review for this.

We had a lovely night's stay at the lodge. The room was small but very we'll decorated and with lots of lovely extras that make a difference, a welcome card, dressing gowns, tea, coffee, biscuits, sweets and fresh milk in a thermos. The garden, lounge and breakfast room were equally pretty and inviting - a real home from home. Breakfast itself was lovely, all locally sourced and a good range of quality products. The one small criticism concerns the en-suite which was functional but needs updating. The owners though have only had the place for a few months and are gradually working on some renovations - not that there's much that needs doing. We had a lovely bathroom next to our bedroom and this more than made up for the en-suite.Finally, the owners themselves, were friendly, informative but not over-attentive.Great value for money and we'd happily recommend.

Andrew and Clare are top class proprietors, who want to make sure that you feel comfortable and at home from the moment you arrive. We have stayed in thislovely old place before and love the room overlooking the quaint cottage garden at the back. Nice beams and character, but neat, spotless and freshly decorated. The Ashmores pay attention to little details that make all the difference, from fresh milk and biscuits for the tea tray to sweets and a postcard of old Chard with a welcome note. Great lounge and breakfast too - we'll be back yet again!
